OPPD Hosts Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth Event to Help the Community
Next Saturday, March 2, starting at 9 a.m., the Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) will hold the Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth event in zone 6 of Aksarben Village, located at 67 St. and Center, in Omaha. This event’s primary goal is to raise funds for utility energy assistance programs through timed 10K and 5K races, as well as an untimed one-mile walk.
The Omaha Public Power District and the Metropolitan Utilities District will co-host the 17th annual Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth. This event aims to help customers who are facing difficulties paying their utility bills. The online registration window at HeatTheStreetsOmaha.com will close on Friday, March 1 at 11:59 p.m.; however, participants can still register in person the morning of the event. This year’s co-chairs are Jim Begley, M.U.D. board president, and his wife, Rebecca, as well as OPPD board member Matt Core and his wife, Katy. Their goal is to register 1,000 participants and raise at least $300,000. Last year, the event raised $138,081. Since its inception, Heat the Streets has raised more than $1.6 million for utility assistance programs. Funds raised are managed by Dollar Energy Fund Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) organization, and subsequently distributed to the M.U.D. Home Fund. and OPPD’s Energy Assistance Program to assist customers living in Burt, Cass, Colfax, Dodge, Douglas, Johnson, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee, Richardson, Sarpy, Saunders, and Washington counties.
