Farewell to Guatemalan Consul General in Omaha
By Oswell Reza
July 31 marked the end of a significant stage for the Consul General of Guatemala in Omaha, Billy Muñoz, who said goodbye to his post after years of service in various states of the United States. Muñoz’s career is distinguished by his dedication and leadership, which culminated in the opening of the Guatemalan consulate in Omaha, a feat long awaited by the local community. Since his arrival in Omaha, Muñoz was committed to making the establishment of a consulate that could serve the growing Guatemalan population in Nebraska and surrounding states a reality.
With patience, discipline and a deep sense of responsibility, he managed to materialize this project, which now provides consular services to thousands of people in a dignified and efficient manner. “I feel very happy about what we have achieved here. Nebraska represents an important part of my career, and knowing that now thousands of Guatemalans can access consular services without having to travel long distances is very gratifying,” said Muñoz in an interview with Mundo Latino. The opening of the consulate in Omaha not only facilitated access to essential documents and services for Guatemalans in the region, but also became a support and guidance center for a community that, in many cases, faces significant challenges far from their home country.
Under Muñoz’s leadership, the consulate distinguished itself for its efficiency and humane treatment, aspects that were recognized by both users and consular staff. However, the decision to leave his post was not easy. Muñoz explained that his retirement responds to a personal and family need. “I have dedicated many years to my career and I am very proud of what we have achieved, but now it is time to prioritize my family. My wife and children have been away for a long time, and I want to be with them, enjoying the moments that I have missed,” he confessed. Muñoz’s decision reflects the difficult balance between professional duty and family responsibilities, a dilemma that many in high-responsibility positions understand well. “These are difficult decisions, but when it comes to family, the effort is worth it,” he added.
Muñoz’s legacy in Omaha is not limited to the infrastructure and services he left in place. His leadership and human warmth left a deep mark on those who worked alongside him. Ricardo González, vice consul of the same entity, who will temporarily assume control of the consulate, highlighted Muñoz’s positive influence on the consular team. “Consul Muñoz is a born leader. His dedication and commitment to the Guatemalan community are exemplary, and all of us who had the opportunity to work with him admire and respect him deeply,” said González. “We will continue his work with the same spirit and dedication.”
Muñoz’s future is still to be defined in terms of work, but his immediate focus is to enjoy the company of his family. “For now I don’t know what I will do, but what I do know is that I want to be with my children, with my wife. I want to spend more time with them and enjoy them more,” he said. His departure marks the end of a stage, but also the beginning of a new chapter in his life, one in which family takes center stage. The Guatemalan consulate in Omaha will continue to operate under the temporary direction of Vice Consul Ricardo Gonzalez, who has promised to maintain the high standards established by Muñoz. The Guatemalan community in Nebraska and beyond will surely remember Billy Muñoz not only as an effective consul, but as a leader who, with dedication and humanity, transformed the way consular services are provided in the region. Much success, Billy Muñoz! For your work and the great person that you are, you will be remembered with appreciation among those who were able to know your human side.
