¡Unidos Avanzamos! Gala: Celebrating 10 Years of Unity in Action

Siouxland gathered last weekend to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Unity in Action at the ¡Unidos Avanzamos! Gala. Over the past decade, the organization has made a profound impact in the region, empowering individuals through bilingual citizenship classes, increasing voter turnout, and fostering a sense of belonging in a richly diverse community.

Unity in Action has become a cornerstone of cultural celebration and civic engagement in Siouxland. Through events like the Celebrate Siouxland Festival, the organization highlights the region’s vibrant diversity with music, art, and food, helping to create connections that strengthen the entire community.

The gala was a momentous occasion to reflect on Unity in Action’s journey and its vision for the future. Founders and siblings Ismael and Balbina Valadez were honored for their dedication and leadership in establishing Unity in Action. Their commitment to building a more inclusive community has created lasting change, ensuring that Unity in Action continues to grow as a vital resource in Siouxland.

South Sioux City Mayor Rod Koch delivered an inspiring keynote address, sharing his personal journey from working on a garbage truck to becoming a community leader. With 38 years at Great West Casualty and decades of service on the South Sioux City Council, Koch exemplifies the values of hard work and dedication that align with Unity in Action’s mission.

Unity in Action expressed heartfelt gratitude to the community members, partners, and sponsors who have supported its work over the years. The gala was made possible by the generosity of sponsors, including Centro Hispano, Catholic Charities/Heartland Counseling, As You Climb Strategies, Oligmueller Law Firm PC LLO, and Morningside University, among others.

Their support has fueled Unity in Action’s growth and enabled the organization to strengthen civic engagement, promote leadership development, and foster a sense of belonging throughout the community.

Unity in Action also extended thanks to everyone who attended, donated, or supported from afar. Those who couldn’t attend are invited to contribute to the $10 for 10 Years campaign. Donations will ensure Unity in Action can continue empowering individuals and building a stronger Siouxland.

Looking Ahead

As Unity in Action celebrates a decade of service, it remains committed to its mission of creating a community where everyone is seen, heard, and valued. The organization looks forward to continuing its transformative work, empowering individuals, and fostering unity in Siouxland for years to come.
