Elena Alonso Joins Siouxland Community Health Center to Enhance Community Care
So. Sioux City, NE. Elena Alonso, a Clinical Pharmacist from Creighton University, has recently joined Siouxland Community Health Center in South Sioux City. She brings her expertise in diabetes management, hypertension, and cholesterol care to the center, where she aims to impact the community positively. One of the innovative services Alonso is excited to implement is bubble packaging for medications, which will make it easier for patients to manage their prescriptions. Alonso is thrilled to be part of a dedicated and collaborative team at the health center.
As a Clinical Pharmacist, Alonso works closely with other healthcare providers to deliver comprehensive care. Unlike traditional pharmacists, who primarily fill prescriptions, Alonso’s role allows her to engage directly with patients, offering more personalized management of chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol. She also assists in identifying medication errors and suggests alternatives or adjustments to the providers to ensure patients receive the most effective treatment possible.
A key part of Alonso’s mission is to address the needs of the Hispanic community, particularly in improving diabetes care. She recognizes that language barriers have historically prevented some patients from fully participating in healthcare. As a bilingual professional, Alonso is uniquely positioned to bridge this gap. She emphasizes how empowering it is for patients to ask questions and receive answers in their native language, which fosters a better understanding of their health and care.
In addition to traditional glucometers, the clinic offers advanced diabetes sensors that provide continuous monitoring, reducing the need for frequent finger pricks. Alonso believes this technology can significantly improve diabetes management by giving patients real-time feedback on how their diet and lifestyle choices affect their blood sugar levels. For example, patients can see how traditional meals, like pozole, impact their glucose levels and make more informed decisions about their diet.
Alonso’s passion for serving her community stems from her personal experience. Raised in Mexico, she completed high school and university in this country and now resides in Siouxland where much of her family lives. As the first Clinical Pharmacist in South Sioux City and the first in her family to attend university, Alonso hopes to inspire other Hispanic youth to pursue their dreams. She encourages them to take advantage of the many resources available, such as scholarships and mentorship, and to never give up on their goals.
Siouxland Community Health Center is a leader in patient-centered care, offering services on a sliding financial scale to ensure affordability. The clinic also provides financial counseling to help patients navigate their options, making healthcare accessible regardless of financial status. Alonso is proud to be part of a team that prioritizes breaking down barriers to care, whether financial or linguistic.
In addition to offering services in English and Spanish, the clinic provides interpretation for other languages through the Language Line, making it accessible to a diverse patient population. Alonso is excited to contribute to the clinic’s mission of offering everyone in the community high-quality care.
Elena Alonso invites anyone who may need assistance with managing medications, diabetes, hypertension, or cholesterol to contact her at (402) 412-7243. She looks forward to serving the community and helping patients achieve better health outcomes.
