Omaha Police and DEA Warn of Dangerous New Fentanyl Mixture in Metro Area

Omaha, NE . The Omaha Police Department’s Narcotics Unit, in collaboration with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), has issued a public warning regarding a dangerous new drug trend in the Omaha metropolitan area.

During a recent joint investigation, authorities seized a substance referred to as “purple” fentanyl. Laboratory tests confirmed it contained fentanyl mixed with lidocaine, a combination never before detected by Omaha investigators. According to law enforcement, the product is believed to be originating from the Kansas City region.

Lidocaine, commonly used as a local anesthetic, blocks nerve signals and can intensify the dangerous side effects of fentanyl. Unlike fentanyl, the effects of lidocaine cannot be reversed by Narcan, which is designed to counteract opioid overdoses.

Police urge the community to remain vigilant. If an overdose is suspected, residents are advised to call 911 immediately. Under Nebraska’s Good Samaritan Law, individuals seeking help for someone experiencing a drug overdose are protected from certain drug-related charges, encouraging people to act quickly without fear of prosecution.
