Northeast Community College in South Sioux City to host free suicide talk event

SOUTH SIOUX CITY – Northeast Community College in South Sioux City will host a free event to discuss suicide.

suicideTALK is a 90-minute session that invites interested community members to become more aware of suicide prevention opportunities in their communities. Dealing openly with the stigma around suicide, this exploration focuses upon the question, “Should we talk about suicide?”

The event, sponsored by the Northeast NE Coalition for Suicide Prevention, will be held twice on Wednesday, March 22, at the Northeast Community College Extended Campus, 1001 College Way, in South Sioux City. The first session will from
10 a.m.-12 p.m., with a second session from 5-7 p.m.

Donna Benson, of the Northeast NE Coalition for Suicide Prevention, said suicideTALK is aimed at most members of a community or organization. Its goal is to help make it easier to have open and honest talk about suicide. She said it would be ideal
if most members of a community attended a suicideTALK session.

“We assume that exposure of even ten percent of a community’s population to suicideTALK would make a difference in the support given to suicide prevention activities. We hope and believe that suicideTALK can contribute to a suicide-safer community.”
