Recent News regarding the shutdown, due to COVID-19 of meat Processing plants in South Dakota, Iowa, and Colorado as well as the difficult situation in Grand Island have pointed out the impact that such closures may have on the American food supply.

Left out of the news is the fact that a very large percentage of workers in those plants are Latinos. In the tight spaces where they work shoulder to shoulder, they are terribly exposed to any carrier of the disease, but they have received little protective personal equipment and very little information in Spanish regarding the transmission, prevention, and treatment of COVID-19.

Considered essential for the American food supply, these Latino workers join their brothers who harvest the produce and fruits, process, cook, and serve the food that we all consume. It was not considered essential that they should receive the same level of protection, and education that other essential workers. Perhaps, after all is said and done they will receive the same kind of consideration as other groups.

Noticias recientes sobre el cierre, debido a COVID-19 de plantas de procesamiento de carne en Dakota del Sur, Iowa y Colorado, así como la difícil situación en Grand Island han señalado el impacto que tales cierres pueden tener en el suministro de alimentos estadounidense.

Las noticias ignoran el hecho de que un porcentaje muy grande de trabajadores en esas plantas son latinos. En los espacios reducidos donde trabajan hombro con hombro, estan terriblemente expuestos a cualquier portador de la enfermedad, pero han recibido poco equipo de protección personal y muy poca información en español sobre la transmisión, prevención y tratamiento de COVID-19.

Considerados esenciales para el suministro de alimentos estadounidenses, estos trabajadores latinos se unen a sus hermanos que cosechan los productos y frutas, procesan, cocinan y sirven los alimentos que todos consumimos. No se consideró esencial que recibieran el mismo nivel de protección y educación que otros trabajadores esenciales. Tal vez, después de que todo se ha dicho y hecho, recibirán el mismo tipo de consideración que otros grupos.
