Health Department: Tetanus Vaccinations Should be Current for Storm Clean-up

The Douglas County Health Department recommends that people involved in cleaning up debris from
Friday’s storm have had a tetanus vaccination in the last ten years.
The Douglas County Health Department will hold a tetanus vaccine clinic from 10:00 am to 2:00
pm starting tomorrow, Sunday, April 28, 2024, through Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Common
Ground Community Center, 1701 Veterans Drive in Elkhorn.
This clinic is intended for those affected by Friday’s storm or the clean-up.
Children (<19 years old) being vaccinated must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Friday’s violent storms that devastated parts of Douglas County created high-risk conditions for tetanus,
according to Health Director Dr. Lindsay Huse.
Action Steps:

  • If cleaning up debris from the storm, ensure you have had a tetanus vaccine in the last 10 years.
  • If you have a minor injury (scrape, shallow puncture wound, etc.) and it has been over 5 years
since your last tetanus vaccine, you need it.
  • For serious wounds (deep puncture wounds, dirty wounds, wounds requiring stitches, etc.), see a
    medical provider immediately for treatment.
