Memorable Celebration: 20th Anniversary of the Office of Latin/Latin American Studies (OLLAS)

A wonderful and memorable moment marked the 20th-anniversary celebration of the Office of Latin/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), who expressed their sincere gratitude to all who joined in this significant event

The day was filled with gratitude and memories, with special thanks to founding director Dr. Lourdes Gouveia and OLLAS alumni Liz Codina and Daniel Martin, who offered moving words during the celebration. The shared reflections highlighted the importance of OLLAS in the community and its impact in the academic and social spheres. The active participation of students, faculty, staff, and community members throughout these 20 years has been critical to the continued success of OLLAS. This celebration is also a recognition of all those who have supported the mission and vision of OLLAS, contributing to the cultural and educational enrichment of the university and the community as a whole.

The event was attended by prominent members of the university community, who shared their experiences and reflections on the positive impact of OLLAS. The touching words and atmosphere of camaraderie created a sense of unity and appreciation for the diversity that OLLAS has promoted for two decades.

The toast to OLLAS’ 20 years is also a recognition of the vision of the future and the perseverance of those who have led and been part of this initiative over the years. The continued commitment to academic excellence, research, and community service has established OLLAS as a benchmark in Latin American studies.

OLLAS has not only been an academic center but a vital space for the exchange of ideas, the promotion of cultural diversity, and the promotion of inclusion, ensuring that its large community transcends the classrooms, becoming a social fabric that strengthens the richness of the university experience.

At this celebration, commitment to OLLAS’ mission of promoting research, teaching, and community engagement on Latin American and Latino issues was renewed. Looking forward with enthusiasm, anticipating more achievements and significant contributions from OLLAS to UNO and the community.
