Meet the Commissioners of the Nebraska Commission on Latino Americans: María Whitmore, Chair


Maria Whitmore, a resident of Shelby, NE, serves as the Nebraska Commission on Latino Americans Chair. Additionally, she represents the community as a member of the Nebraska Judicial Resources Commission for the Fifth Judicial District. With an extensive background in community leadership and volunteerism at Polk and Butler Co., Maria has demonstrated exceptional commitment to diverse areas, including agriculture, economic development, religious education, education, and senior care.

Maria and her husband, Greg, operate a five-generation family farm in Shelby, NE. Her community roots and experience in the agricultural industry give her a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing rural communities in Nebraska.

In addition to her work in agriculture, María dedicates part of her time to teaching Spanish at the university level. Her commitment to education and linguistic diversity reflects her belief in the importance of inclusion and intercultural understanding in today’s society.

As Chair of the Nebraska Commission on Latino Americans, María leads efforts to promote the well-being and participation of the Latino community in the state. Her vision and leadership have been instrumental in strengthening ties between Latino communities and state government and addressing the issues and challenges they face.
